The 68RFE is the six-speed automatic behind the 2007.5-2024 Ram 2500/3500 with the 6.7L Cummins. And it has a bad reputation in the truck community for being weak. A lot of the problems come down to heat: the factory pan doesn't hold a lot of fluid, and heat is the #1 enemy and the biggest driver of the failures this transmission is known for.
A deep pan doesn't rebuild the transmission, but it's one of the cheapest, easiest things you can do to stop cooking it in the first place.
Why the 68RFE runs hot in stock form
The stock pan doesn't hold much fluid, which means there's less volume to absorb and shed heat before it recirculates. Add towing, larger tires, or a tune that puts more torque through the transmission, and temperatures climb fast, especially if the truck is under heavy load. When fluids are hot, everything downstream gets worse: clutch packs glaze and slip, the torque converter takes more abuse, and seals wear faster.
What the pan upgrade actually fixes (and what it doesn’t)
A deep pan upgrade increases total fluid capacity by 3 quarts and adds surface area (often with cooling fins) to shed heat faster, directly reducing the operating temperatures driving clutch wear, converter shudder, and valve body wear.
It does not replace the overdrive clutch pack, rebuild the valve body or fix a pump that's already worn.
Think of it as protecting the transmission you have and slowing the known failure points. Not a substitute for a full rebuild if you are already getting slipping, shudder, or codes.
