Duramax Tuning in Edmonton

Specializing in the L5P and LML

Duramax owners know their truck by the letter code, not just the model year: LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, L5P. Six generations since 2001, each with a different emissions setup, fuel pump and security system. Those differences change what we can optimize with the tune.

We specialize mostly in the L5P and LML.

Find your generation

Generation / yearChangesWhat this means for tuning
LML / 2011-2016DEF added, switched to a CP4 injection pump. The CP4 has a big weakness with its roller-tappet design and is prone to failure. Upgrading this is worth discussing before tuning for more power.
L5P / 2017-presentSwitched to the HP4 injection pump, stronger internals, most powerful factory Duramax (445 hp / 910 lb-ft torque). In 2024 it was increased to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque.Best tuning headroom of all the Duramaxes, but it has the most security and the most complex emissions to work around.

What actually changes between generations

  • Security setup: the LML has an accessible, standard calibration layout, while the L5P has heavy factory encryption and a security lockdown that makes it harder to unlock the ECM.
  • Emissions system: the L5P and LML are equipped with a DPF, EGR and DEF system. This is something the tune has to work around if your truck isn’t deleted.
  • Fuel pump: the LML with the CP4 is known to fail and explode internally, sending metal all through the fuel system. The HP4 in the L5P is way more reliable than the previous one.
  • Bottom end strength: both the LML and L5P have robust factory bottom ends, but the L5P has upgraded factory rods and pistons that can handle higher horsepower.
  • Available devices: because of the different security, the L5P needs to be unlocked physically (sending the ECM out to HP Tuners) before it can take tune files.

Types of tune

Single tune (recommended): one profile, one customization. We can tune for what you want in the truck, whether that’s economy/reliability, tow, or max power. This is recommended because your truck gets used to one tune and it’s going to run and idle smoother.

Switch on the fly: this is built for 0-200 hp that you can toggle using a dial with 50 hp intervals. It is more fun, but the relearning on your transmission takes time.

Packages

  • Single tune (economy/reliability, tow, power) $1200-1700
  • Switch on the fly $1500-2000

FAQ

How do I know which generation my truck is?

For the Duramax you can tell by your model year (2011-2016 for LML and 2017-2026 for L5P) or by the 8th letter of the VIN (8 for LML and Y for L5P).

Is an LBZ actually better to tune than a newer truck?

Diesel guys in the community praise the LBZ for being the best platform, because the engine has strong internals, the 6-speed Allison is great for reliability and aftermarket support, plus there was no DEF system added yet.

Do I need to tune my truck after deleting it?

Yes, you need a tune after a delete, and that is included here at the shop. The tune tells the ECM that the deleted systems aren’t there anymore, so you won’t get engine codes.

Should I upgrade my fuel system before tuning an LML for more power?

We would recommend upgrading it, because the CP4 is famous for catastrophically failing and sending metal into the entire fuel system. There is a disaster prevention kit that can be installed as well, so that if it does fail, the metal shards don’t get into the fuel system.

Can I switch power levels myself after the tune is done?

Yes, you can switch the power levels if you get the switch on the fly. Or we can re-tune afterwards as well.
